“Local Farmers! Local Food!”, reads the sign in front of the new H Street Farmers Market, proudly proclaiming the new market to pedestrians and drivers as they pass the 600 block of H Street NE.
Born out of community input to the H Street NE Revitalization Plan recently completed by the Department of Planning, the H Street Farmers Market opened on June 5 and operates every Saturday from 9am to 1pm in the parking lot between 6th and 7th Streets NE.
The Market is operated by FRESHFARM Markets, an organization created in 1997 by the American Farmland Trust.
In support of their expansion to H Street NE, LISC provided grant funds to FRESHFARM Markets for the purchase of new computer and software equipment.
Currently, seven farmers sell their goods at the Market. From hydroponic tomatoes, cucumbers and cut flowers, to seasonal fruits, collard greens and arugula, the H Street Farmer’s Market sells a considerable variety of goods.
With successful markets in Dupont Circle, Penn Quarter, St. Michael’s MD and Georgetown, FRESHFARM Markets comes to H Street NE with a good track record and is a welcome addition to the H Street NE Commercial Corridor.
