If you had been strolling through the Randle Highlands neighborhood on October 27, you might have wondered why Abe Pollin, the owner of the Washington Wizards, along with several of his players, were gutting the interior of a vacant apartment complex, while wearing construction hats and t-shirts that said “Home Team.”
No, they were not venting frustration over their less than stellar record this past season, they were helping the East of the River CDC prepare the long vacant Dubois Garden Apartments for the substantial gut, rehabilitation and conversion to condominiums.
Created as a partnership between the Fannie Mae Foundation and 12 NBA teams, the Home Team program works towards revitalizing local neighborhoods by providing financial assistance and, on occasion, a healthy supply of elbow grease. Joining in on the demolition efforts were representatives from the Fannie Mae Foundation and LISC’s own Ramon Jacobson and Marty Mellett.
LISC provided East of the River CDC with a $364,607 loan to help them gain clear title to the property, and once the extensive rehabilitation is complete, Dubois Gardens will be converted into a 27- unit condominium.
